Dear Monsters, Welcome
When you first openly admit you want a website for stories, you open the door for all kinds of monsters to jump in.
Stating the ambition out loud is the only way to actually get it done, so the process is both necessary & inevitable.
I still wasn’t prepared for what followed. I assume the same is true for any courageous soul trying to build something from nothing.
The monsters showed up on cue.
I know nothing about building websites: it’ll end up an ugly, half-built, abandoned page.
What I write will go unseen. I’m bad at this, and worse at social media.
If anyone does find it, they’ll forget it. People want fast, amusing snacks to wind down after work. Not this.
I’ll invest time and money and get nothing back.
I’ll never finish it. I’ll stop believing in it, or get pulled into something else and walk away.
And all of this might just be common sense, trying to save me.
But I don’t want to be saved from trying. Not even from failing. The only thing I want to be saved from is the regret of never having tried at all. I’ve been on that road. I know the scenery: bitter, shallow, static.
I want to move. To build.
Life isn’t about what we avoid. It’s about what we try to make. And whatever this becomes, it will be more than nothing ever gave me.
Stick around.
-D.
